  • SPE Distinguished Lecture - 2021

    Sunday, March 14, 2021, 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM AST
Title: In Relentless Pursuit of Offshore Safety: A Privileged Perspective Speaker: Derrick O’Keeffe Abstract: Offshore worker occupational safety may be improving, but less frequent, high consequence events and leading indicators – like major gas releases – are proving stubbornly difficult to drive down. Getting the right information is key to understanding the risks and the available controls for effective risk management. Is there an over-focus on bad-outcome events, and insufficient attention paid to “weak signals”? Are opportunities in data analytics being missed? The concept of “Privileged Perspectives” is introduced; the idea that industry players, stakeholders and governments have access to quantitative and qualitative information in different ways, and can apply this for their specific organizational goals. Perhaps the most powerful use of a regulators’ Privileged Perspective is to influence improved safety outcomes.   Australia became the world’s largest exporter of LNG in 2019 in a technology-led growth. It also has facilities from the 1960s. Against this diverse backdrop, its offshore regulator provides examples of how it has developed and uses its Privileged Perspective, working with industry, to promote risk awareness and control measures. A single event that narrowly avoided a diving fatality led, through a “big data” approach to a global opportunity to reduce risk across countless dynamically positioned vessels. A 500 well study on barrier failures revealed interesting opportunities in consistent, simple reporting and prediction. The way forward? Commitment at the leadership level to greater pooling – at a global level - of Privileged Perspectives derived from safety information, to drive opportunities for safe offshore work. Speaker Biography: Derrick O’Keeffe is the Head of Safety and Integrity for NOPSEMA, Australia’s independent offshore regulator. He holds a BSc (Hons.) in Chemical Engineering and an MBA. He has 37 years’ engineering, commercial, management and Director experience in oil and gas in Australia, Iran, UAE, Bangladesh, Africa, USA and the UK. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, life member and past President of the Petroleum Club of Western Australia, where he contributes to short-courses on petroleum. He is a regular witness at Australian government parliamentary senate hearings and inquiries. How to Register: Click Here .

  • A Cost-effective Approach to Lower-temperature Geothermal Energy Generation - Technical Webinar

    Wednesday, March 24, 2021, 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM AST
Session Overview: Geothermal energy currently plays a small role globally in meeting the world's energy demand and until very recently was focused on high-temperature volcanic formations limited to certain regions of the globe. Opportunities now exist to produce a large amount of geothermal electricity or heat from lower temperature (80 to 150 degrees C) sedimentary formations and wells. In order for the economics to be profitable, Petrolern LLC has developed a unique patented approach to screen for appropriate current late-stage oil and gas wells, or dry holes, that can be repurposed to geothermal energy. This avoids the cost of drilling new wells.  The technical, environmental and financial aspects of this lower-temperature approach are described in this seminar. Current petroleum wells can be used to co-produce hydrocarbons and electricity/heat; or repurposed to geothermal energy alone, where well abandonment costs and liabilities can be deferred. IRRs above 15% can be realized in the latter scenario. Speaker: Dr Alan J Cohen, Director Business Development & Partnerships, Petrolern LLC Speaker Biography: Dr Alan J Cohen is an internationally recognized executive, geoscientist and petrophysicist who serves as Director of Technology Partnerships for Petrolern LLC - an award winning R&D and service company operating since 2012 in the geothermal, carbon storage and clean oil and gas spaces. • Non-Intrusive Well and Reservoir Surveillance Solutions using Chemical Tracers - Technical Webinar

    Tuesday, May 18, 2021, 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM AST
Session Overview: Tracer technology offers a powerful means for conducting production and reservoir surveillance, which is both operationally simple to deploy, cost effective and can measure flow properties less than one metre to ten’s of kilometres between wells. Surveillance using tracer solutions truly provide continuous multi-scale monitoring from a well to reservoir scale.  It utilizes flow through porous media and pipe flow in wells as the telemetry method to transport the signals to the sampling point. Therefore, tracer technology is a viable alternative as permanent monitoring technology of choice for well surveillance in today’s field developments, and it is a risk-free solution from both planning and deployment perspectives. In terms of reservoir surveillance, inter well tracers not only provide an understanding of the preferential flow paths between injectors and production wells on a field wide scale, they also provide a method of understanding reservoir connectivity, verifying suspected flow barriers, characterizing flood patterns, estimating residual oil saturations between wells and analyzing the effects of volumetric sweep efficiency. Inflow tracing is designed to evaluate near wellbore flow performance such as verifying clean up, identifying the location of water breakthrough over time and quantifying flow. The co-implementation of both tracer technologies in the early stage of waterflood or EOR development offers unique ability to monitor wells/reservoir, eliminating the need for expensive and time-consuming wireline interventions and overcome any wellsite logistics challenges.  An increased adoption of integrating inter well and inflow tracer interpretation can reduce uncertainty in history matching well/reservoir models and thus improve reservoir management strategies using assisted history matching tools or optimisers based on results obtained from the tracer signal responses. This presentation will discuss tracer project conceptualization, design, analysis workflow and implementation of combining inflow and interwell chemical tracers. Speaker: Edmund Leung – Senior Technology Advisor, RESMAN Speaker Biography: Edmund Leung is currently the Senior Technology Advisor with RESMAN, based in the U.A.E. since December 2015. He was previously the Vice President for Well Technology leading the RESMAN flow-related interpretation and R&D team, based in Trondheim in Norway. • Mechanically Resilient Cement System – Solution for Enhanced Zonal Isolation - Technical Webinar

    Wednesday, June 30, 2021, 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM AST
Session Overview: The integral cement sheath is a key for long-term zonal isolation. Incomplete cement coverage, cracked sheath and micro-annulus could result in inter-zonal communication, loss of hydrocarbon production or sustained casing pressures. Loss of zonal isolation, especially when leaks are vented to surface, pose safety and environmental risks, as well as the loss of valuable hydrocarbons. The mechanically resilient cement systems have been developed to cope up with the gradually degraded hydraulic seal in the post slurry-placement phases. Combined with good well clean-up and cementing practices, this technology significantly reduces the risk of loss of hydraulic isolation during production and after abandonment. The technology has been applied in several locations including the HTHP wells which are subjected to mechanical and thermal stresses over the life of well. Speaker: Rameez Anwar, Well Cementing Specialist – Sprint Oil & Gas Services Speaker Profile: Rameez Anwar is a mechanical engineering graduate and comes with eight years of experience in the energy industry on different well construction projects. He holds master’s in engineering management and currently working as Cementing Specialist with Sprint Oil and Gas Services. He is responsible for technical, commercial and operational support for the company’s cementing and pumping services. He authored/co-authored few publications in the field of HTHP cementing and also remained technical resource speaker for ADIPEC, EGYPS and ATCE. Rameez is a professional member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is also an active member of SPE at International and local level and currently leading the communications team for SPE Northern Emirates Section. • Quantum dot technology: Novel approach to Well and Reservoir Production Surveillance - Webinar

    Wednesday, July 7, 2021, 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM AST
Session Overview: The dynamic well and reservoir production surveillance plays the crucial role in optimizing physical data driven models for reservoir characterization. Traditional methods for monitoring the inflow profile are not always practically feasible and cost-effective, especially when it comes to hard-to-recover reserves. The alternative method of inflow chemical tracers does not require well intervention in order to obtain zonal production contribution data. Another advantage of quantum dot technology solution is its robustness and production surveillance longevity for several years. The presentation focuses on the case study of deploying quantum dot inflow tracers in multiple wells in one field. The study further extends to use of artificial intelligence and machine learning for data analysis and interpretation of the results. The technology creates a unique set of values for the users: continuous data sets and their analyses on the well and reservoir performance over the life cycle of the field, with the improvement of enhanced oil recovery water flooding methods. Guest Speaker: Mr. Nadir Husein, General Manager, Middle East and North Africa, GEOSPLIT Speaker Profile: Nadir has 20+ years of extensive administrative and engineering and field experience in the integrated application of hydraulic fracturing services, coiled tubing, regional sales of corporate products, project management. • Hybrid Physics-based Data-driven Methods – the future for Petroleum Engineering? - Technical Webinar

    Wednesday, August 11, 2021, 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM AST
Session Overview: Data-driven methods are widely and successfully used in social sciences, an area where no discernible physics exist, but a plethora of observations exist. As a result there has been a drive to implement such approaches into our industry. However, in petroleum engineering, reservoir characterization and flow in porous media, we are actually faced with the opposite scenario: limited observations with ambiguous interpretation (example well log or seismic data) and relatively well know physics and equations. Over the last 50 years, we have seen the establishment of physics-based approaches, with numerical simulation at the core of it. We are seeing the emergence of hybrid approaches: data-driven but physics compliant. In this talk, we contend that these methods may provide a best-of-both worlds, and we provide two specific examples of such hybrid methods. First, we introduce a novel method for zonal production allocation, which allows for the inclusion of physics at the well (well log, relative permeabilities etc) and observations (surveillance, completion events etc). We demonstrate through project examples how this approach significantly improves production allocation, and therefore reservoir management decisions. Secondly, we discuss the integration of the published Remaining Oil Compliant Mapping algorithm with machine learning methods for the purpose of ‘locate-the-remaining-oil’ activities, and determining behind casing and infill drilling opportunities. Drilling results from recent projects are examined, and the accuracy of the method evaluated. Guest Speaker: Mr. Babak Moradi, Reservoir Engineer & Data Scientist at Three60 Energy Group Speaker Profile: Babak Moradi has over 13 years of experience reservoir engineering. He has been involved in studies of more than 20 mature fields located in the Middle East, South East Asia, Australia, North Sea, and Africa. Babak is an expert in machine learning and programming, he has developed several software packages relating to petroleum engineering. He is the author of 40 scientific publications in areas of enhanced oil recovery, CO2 sequestration, fluid properties modelling, hybrid workflows, and has published a textbook on fluid flow in the wellbore. His strong background in mathematics and programming helps him to turn data into knowledge. Click Here for LinkedIn Meet & Greet!
