  • SPE Distinguished Lecture - Making Better Upstream Acquisitions

    Wednesday, February 2, 2022, 02:30 PM - 03:30 PM AST
Session Title: Making Better Upstream Acquisitions - The role of the Petroleum Engineer and why its different from the day job. Abstract: Global upstream transactions are estimated at $150 bn in 2019. Production/cost forecasts and assessment of future opportunities/risks are crucial inputs to the economic evaluation of a potential acquisition. It follows that potential buyers need to conduct technical due diligence on these inputs. In times of volatile oil and gas prices, good technical due diligence can be the difference between a good and a bad deal. Petroleum engineers are often called upon to join acquisition teams. With typically a few days/weeks of evaluation time, technical due diligence requires considerable focus and a fundamentally different approach to the typical industry workflow. Yet, there are no industry courses on this subject and a OnePetro search reveals the last paper was 30 years ago. This talk highlights how a Petroleum Engineer should approach working in an upstream acquisitions team and illustrates practical methods for conducting technical due diligence. A 0'top down' process that starts with identifying what drives value is proposed. Several case studies are presented showing how good technical due diligence has had a fundamental impact on acquisition decisions. The key thing I would like people to take away is that technical due diligence requires a very different approach from the Petroleum Engineer's 'day job'. Speaker Profile: Our guest speaker would be  Mr. Geoff Salter. Geoff Salter is a Partner at RISC Advisory specializing in Reservoir Engineering. He holds an MSc in Petroleum Engineering. His early industry experience was focused on field development and production operations with major operators Shell and Woodside. During his nearly 25 years at RISC Advisory based in London or Perth, he has led technical due diligence teams on oil and gas acquisition opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, Middle East and Africa. He has travelled extensively throughout these regions, presented at industry conferences and participated in SPE ATWs.

  • Common design characteristics of high- and low-temperature deep geothermal wells

    Wednesday, February 9, 2022, 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM AST
Session Title: Common design characteristics of high- and low-temperature deep geothermal wells. Abstract: Join our guest speaker to find out how Geothermal (low Enthalpy vs. high Enthalpy) wells are different compared to conventional Oil and Gas Well when it comes to material selection, well design, completions, and what API/ISO/Thermal standards are applicable. The webinar will focus on the design criteria and implications of high temperatures and high flow rates for geothermal wells. Speaker Profile: Our guest speaker would be   Mr. Ozgur Balamir, Drilling Manager - GeothermEx,  Schlumberger . Mr. Balamir designs, engineers, and manages the drilling and maintenance of geothermal wells. He formulates detailed drilling and workover plans, and he provides on-site supervision of domestic and international rotary drilling, core drilling, testing, and workover operations. He also develops and manages drillingservices contracts, equipment procurement, and inventory control for domestic and international drilling operations. His other experience includes casing design, cementing, and analysis of drilling data for establishing efficient drilling practices as well as expert witness and litigation support services. Mr. Balamir has applied these practices on projects throughout North and Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. He has had on-site experience as a drilling supervisor in North and South America, Turkey, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to joining GeothermEx, Mr. Balamir worked for Geothermal Resource Group (a firm specializing in geothermal drilling consulting and supervision) and for a major energy development and exploration company as a drilling engineer and field supervisor developing the 80-MWe expansion with the Kızıldere II geothermal power plant and the exploration wells for the 45-MWe Alaşehir power plant (both located in Western Turkey). He has additional experience with conventional and unconventional (coal-bed methane) gas projects along the northwest coast of Turkey, and he has worked on an offshore oil and gas drilling rig in the western Black Sea. Mr. Balamir graduated from Istanbul Technical University with a B.S. in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. He is fluent in English and Turkish and holds dual citizenship with the United States and the Republic of Turkey.
